The Czech Heritage Club has no physical boundaries. It is open to anyone who is interested
in preserving and promoting Czech culture; no matter his or her heritage or where they live.

Our organization originated in April 2002 as an outgrowth of the Czech Language and
Culture classes. Marian Topic taught these classes in the New Prague community. Since that time, the group has grown from a social club, to an organization involved in its community.

In 2007 by-laws were developed.
The Club is a 501C-3 organization (Incorporated in 2016) with members
actively promoting Czech heritage thru different events.

The Emperor and the Peasant: Two Men at the Start of the Great War and the End of the Habsburg Empire, by Kenneth Janda, is about World War I and Slovak and Czech emigration to the United States. This history, presented in alternating chapters as two intertwined narratives, juxtaposes the experiences of Emperor Franz Josef and Samuel Mozolák–a Slovak peasant and grandfather of the author’s wife. Mozolák emigrated to New York, started a family, returned to Slovakia, and died on the Eastern Front.

The book will be available for purchase with a book signing to follow the lecture.
It may be bought in advance online from the National Czech & Slovak Museum and Library.

Kenneth Janda is Payson S. Wild Professor Emeritus of Political Science at Northwestern University.

His talk was originally scheduled for April 18 but cancelled due to the death of John Mozolak, grandson of the peasant in the book.
